How Vinted scams work
Scams on Vinted lean on the same few tricks: getting you off Vinted, rushing you, or a listing that hides what is wrong with the item. Learn those, and most scams become easy to spot.
One rule covers the worst of them. Vinted protects purchases made with the Buy now button. If you pay any other way, Vinted says you won't be covered and it won't be able to support you.
Pouncio's bots have read hundreds of thousands of Vinted listings since September and refuse the risky ones every day. The signs below are the ones they look for.
The common scams for buyers
1. Paying outside Vinted
The seller offers a discount if you pay by bank transfer or PayPal friends and family, or asks to carry on the chat on WhatsApp, by text or by email. This is the one never to fall for: the moment your money leaves Vinted, buyer protection no longer applies. Vinted's own advice is to keep every conversation on Vinted and to be cautious of anyone who tries to move it elsewhere.
2. Phishing links and fake Vinted emails or texts
A message, email or text asks you to open a link to confirm your purchase, unlock your order or claim a refund, or to scan a QR code. The page behind it copies Vinted and asks for your login or card details. Vinted says phishing can arrive as messages on Vinted, texts, emails and QR codes, and that you don't have to leave Vinted to confirm a payment or receive an order.
Watch for urgency, threats about your account or an order, and sender addresses or websites that look right but have small differences, like extra letters or numbers.
3. Empty box or "box only"
The photos show a boxed console or phone at a price that looks like a steal. Somewhere in the title or description it says "box only", "empty box" or "photo of the box". You pay for a box. Read the whole description before paying, not only the title and the price. Vinted refunds items that are significantly not as described, and a box that the listing called a box is hard to argue.
4. Locked phones
An iPhone still tied to the last owner's iCloud account cannot be set up by you, and a carrier-locked phone works only with one network. Words like "iCloud", "locked" or "for parts" can sit deep in a description. Ask the seller in the Vinted chat, in writing, whether the phone is free of any account or network lock.
5. Counterfeits
A big brand far under its usual price, with stock photos instead of real ones. Look for real photos of labels, tags and serial numbers, and ask for them if they are missing. If an item turns out to be fake, report it as not as described: under Vinted's refund policy, items confirmed counterfeit don't need to be returned for a refund.
6. Hidden damage
The crack shows only in photo four, the "small mark" is a dent, the charger or controller is missing. Look at every photo at full size and read every line. If something is not shown, such as the screen switched on or the back of the device, ask for it before you pay.
7. Prices that are too good to be true
Real bargains do happen on Vinted, which is why people flip. But a high-value item listed at a fraction of what it resells for is often bait: a box, a broken or locked device, or a seller who will soon ask you to pay elsewhere. A low price is a reason to check everything else twice, never a reason to skip the checks.
8. New sellers with no reviews on expensive items
Everyone starts with zero reviews, so a new account proves nothing on its own. On an expensive item, though, it is a risk worth weighing. Check the profile, the star rating and what other members wrote about buying from that seller, as Vinted recommends.
9. Requests for your details, or to send it another way
A seller asks for your email, phone number or address in the chat, or wants to post the item outside the order. You don't need to: with Vinted's shipping, your profile details are passed to the carrier, so there is no need to share them in messages.
10. Fake tracking
You get a tracking number or a link to a tracking site by message or email, often for a deal made outside Vinted. When you buy with Buy now, you follow the order status and its tracking on Vinted itself. The seller has 5 business days to send the item, unless you agree to extend it. If the tracking says the parcel seems to be lost, or more than 25 business days have passed since it was shipped, you can report it with I have an issue.

Scams that target sellers
- Fake payment confirmations. An email says your item has been paid and asks you to open a link to confirm the sale. Vinted shows exactly this among the real phishing messages its members received. A real sale shows in the order on Vinted, and the money reaches your Vinted Balance once the buyer confirms everything is OK.
- Pay to receive the money. A page asks for your card details or a small fee to release your payment. You don't have to leave Vinted to receive a payment, so any page that asks for this is the scam.
- QR codes. A buyer asks you to scan a QR code to get paid or to check your account. Vinted names QR codes as one of the ways phishing arrives.
- It never arrived. A buyer says the parcel never arrived, or asks you to post it to another address. Ship the way the order says, as Vinted recommends, so the tracking stays with it. If a buyer reports an order delivered but not received, Vinted can investigate with the shipping company.
How Vinted's buyer protection works
When you buy with the Buy now button, Vinted adds a fee to the price at checkout (see what Vinted's fees cost) and covers your purchase under its refund policy. You can ask for a refund if your order:
- was never shipped or is lost
- arrived damaged
- is significantly not as described
The timing is what catches people out. When Vinted tells you the order should have been delivered, or that it seems lost, you get two buttons: Everything is OK, which releases your payment to the seller, and I have an issue. You have 2 calendar days from that notice to report a problem. If you don't, or if you confirm the order, the payment goes to the seller and Vinted can no longer help with a refund. For a purchase from a Pro seller you have 14 days.
What is not covered: a payment made outside Vinted, an item that matches its description but doesn't fit or suit you, minor differences that don't change how it looks or works, and an item used a lot or damaged after delivery.
What to do if something goes wrong
- Don't press Everything is OK until you have checked the item.
- Within the 2 days, press I have an issue in the order's conversation and follow the steps. The order is then suspended, and your payment is held until the issue is resolved.
- Add photos of the item and the problem, the outer and inner packaging, and any damage to the packaging. Keep the packaging until the case is closed.
- Say what you want from the seller. They can offer a full refund, a partial refund, or ask for the item back. A return must be sent within 5 business days of the seller asking, in the same condition and with everything that came with it. The buyer pays return shipping unless the seller covers it.
- If you can't agree, contact Vinted's support team. They review the case and decide what happens next.
If you paid outside Vinted or gave your details to a phishing page, act fast. Report it to Vinted with screenshots, the member's username, the sender's email or phone number and any bank details you were asked to pay. Forward phishing emails to phishing@vinted.com. Freeze the cards involved, change your passwords and turn on two-step sign-in, ask your bank whether it can reverse the payment, and contact the police if money was taken from your account.
A checklist before you pay
- Pay with the Buy now button, never by bank transfer, PayPal friends and family or a link.
- Keep every message on Vinted, and don't open links that take you somewhere else.
- Read the whole description, looking for box only, for parts, locked or missing parts.
- Look at every photo at full size, and ask for the ones that are missing.
- Check the seller's reviews and rating, with extra care on expensive items.
- Compare the price with what the item really resells for. If it is far below, find out why.
- For phones, ask about account and network locks in writing.
- Open expensive parcels on camera, and remember your 2 days.
How Pouncio checks every listing before it buys
Pouncio is an AI bot for Vinted resellers. A bot watches new listings on your country's Vinted and, on Plus and Pro, can buy the ones worth it with auto-buy on Vinted. Before any automatic payment it checks the seller, the listing text and the photos, with an AI looking at the photos and the description, and it pays only if everything passes. Here is what it refuses:
Paying outside Vinted
A request to pay on WhatsApp or by bank transfer is an instant no, at any price.
Boxes and locks
Empty box and box-only listings, iCloud locks and carrier locks.
Damage
Cracked screens, missing parts and "for parts", in the photos or anywhere in the text.
Prices and sellers that don't add up
High-value items priced too far below their value, and low-rated or review-less sellers on expensive items.
A cheap price never overrides a red flag. Every purchase goes through Vinted's own checkout, so Vinted's buyer protection, returns and disputes apply as with any purchase. No check catches everything, so your 2 days still matter.
On the Free plan there is no AI photo check: each find shows simple check chips for the seller, the text, the price and the model, and you buy by hand. Alerts reach you in the app and on Telegram, Discord or email on every plan (see Vinted alerts). Read how the Pouncio Vinted bot decides what to buy, or our guide to reselling on Vinted.
